Letter to Parents

Hi Folks

Welcome back everyone. Many thanks for paying your subs without being reminded. A big welcome to our 4 new members Zayn, Jodie, Annabel and Izzy.

This term we are going to be working for the Brownie Skills badge which covers all sorts of things from knots, addressing envelopes to packing suitcases! Please believe your daughter if/when she asks if she can bring in various obscure things to Brownies. We also hope to go swimming at West Wickham pool and have a picnic in Kelsey Park after half term. The Brownies have suggested raising money for dolphins so we plan to prepare for a ‘mini –fete’ and hold it on 7 July during a ‘normal’ Brownie meeting.

Diary dates

Monday 5 May                  - no Brownies, bank holiday

Monday 26 May      - no Brownies, bank holiday/half term

Sunday 6 July                   - Brownie Fun day at Heartsease, West Wickham (more details later)

Monday 7 July                  - Mini fete (more details later)

Monday 14 July      - last Brownies this term, meet in Kelsey Park (more details later)

Waiting list

Our Pack is now full and I have a couple of girls waiting to join. This is a great position to be in but it does mean that your help is appreciated more than ever. We’ll especially need helpers at the mini-fete and when we go swimming. Please return the tear off slip below. (Also, in the unlikely event that your daughter will no longer be coming to Brownies, would you please let me know so we can give those on the waiting list a chance to join.)

Best wishes

The Girl Guiding website has lots of Brownie stuff on it looks to be fun for the girls.

Housegroups

There are two housegroups supported by our congregation.

The Class Meeting

Leader
Revd Patrick Kandeh

The Wesleyan Class originated as a means of paying debts in the Society in Bristol. Certain members of the society were delegated to collect one penny per week from each of twelve neighbours, until the debt was paid. The class leaders sometimes reported that "they found such and such an one did not live as he ought". Wesley called together the class leaders, and instructed them to interrogate and instruct the class members under their care.

Portrait of John WesleyThis weekly contact developed into class meetings, where "Advice or reproof was given as need required, quarrels made up, misunderstandings removed; and after and hour or two spent in this labour of love, they concluded with prayer and thanksgiving." By this means, the standards of behaviour of members of the Society were maintained: those who transgressed were exhorted to mend their ways; unrepentant "disorderly walkers" were expelled from the Society.

While the possibility of interrogation and reproof cannot be set to one side, the weekly class at Beckenham Methodist Church is primarily a tool to help class members in their life of pilgrimage. Earlier this year we studied issues surrounding Life and Death: in September we looked at the problems arising from living with different and contradictory convictions. The current topic, starting on October 18th, is Islam. Always, however, whatever the subject matter, the emphasis is on the member's personal experience of God, and the development of their relationship with Him.

We begin at the appointed hour, with a hymn: 6.30pm each Wednesday in the New Room, at Bromley Road Church.

TC's at Bromley Road Church

T.C.'s is the name of our Community Cafe at the Bromley Road Site. The money it raises goes to finance our mission projects.

The cafe is open every day from 11:00am until 3:00pm (2.00pm on Mondays) Mondays - Fridays.
You can come for morning coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea and there will always be a welcome. Wherever possible we use Fair Trade products, and there is a wide range of these on display.

You are invited to take a short break from the day and spend time with God in prayer or quiet meditation in the church.

The Monday Fellowship

We welcome both ladies and gentlemen to our devotional meetings, at 2.00pm in the Wesley Lounge of Bromley Road Church.
